What can I do to overcome my depression without taking medicine?

Question by : What can I do to overcome my depression without taking medicine?
I am a 25 year old female. I have not been to a doctor so I have no been diagnosed with depression, but I know I have it. I have been dealing with low self esteem, weight problems which all led to my depression. I am quite frankly still a student and cannot afford the expensive therapy sessions. What are some ways I can do to get over my depression without taking medicine?

Stop being a wuss. Seriously. I’m a guy, and I’ve been through it before. If you really, truly want to get out of depression, you can do it yourself. No instruction or help needed. Force yourself to go out, have a life, hit the gym, do more stuff. No drugs needed. Its a crutch. Toughen up.

What are the leading causes of depression and anxiety in women today?

I think that the reasons that women have such a high rate of anxiety and depression have to do with both hormones and societies attitudes about women and men.

Hormones make me crazy, I won’t deny my menstrual cycle drives me nuts! Men don’t have to deal with that or pregnancy, which can increase the rate of mental illness almost by 25%.

Societies attitudes about women and men? Again huge role. Women have a lot of pressures on them especially when it comes to sexuality and motherhood. Just think about the double standards and our repressed sexuality. It’s enough to depress me if I didn’t know the right people.

Also, women are encouraged to talk about their feelings, where as men are encouraged to be macho or manly and ignore their depressions or anxieties. Women tend to take their emotions out on themselves in a self destructive and noticable manner. Men, on the other hand, are encouraged to bottle it up. Big boys don’t cry, that type of deal. Men are less likely to seek help. It’s just not ‘manly’ whatever manly is, I don’t believe in manly.

How is it possible for a person to leave depression behind without medical help?

Question by Colin: How is it possible for a person to leave depression behind without medical help?
I did just this after 3 years of depression.

My depression culminated in an attempted suicide at age 10.

The modern view in medicine is that suicide is a consequence of failing to cope with “depression”.

There is plenty of information regards this topic online, but hardly any on how a person can overcome depression without medical help, this is why i want to know what you think is a persons reason/s for leaving depression behind without medical help.

Thanks.

How do I get diagnosed with depression while in Iraq?

Question by Kris: How do I get diagnosed with depression while in Iraq?
I’ve been in Iraq for well over a year and while I have been pretty much out of harm’s way for the most part, it has been a rough year emotionally. I have not been diagnosed with depression before because I never saw a psychiatrist or anyone of that nature, however, I can tell you that for a good part of ten years, I’ve been having a series of depression which last for several days.

Here in Iraq, it’s been the most prominent. I would get depressed and feel empty inside and this will last for a week and then I would feel better for a week and get depressed for another week and feel better for three weeks. Usually, my depression is sudden. I would be at work and I will feel fine and then all of a sudden I would feel this uncontrollable saddness and empty feeling inside me. Almost like disappointment or like I lost something. Which would eventually turn into iritability and hostility and back to silence again.

I want to see a real psyciatrist but don’t know what to do. Thanks.

My husband served a year in Iraq, so I understand how emotionally draining it is. Talk to your commander or at least a close friend about this problem. They should point you in the right direction. Depression is a serious problem, and being in Iraq only makes it worse. They should have someone there who can help you. Please talk to someone. You really need to get some help. It won’t go away on it’s own. Good luck. Take care. And thank you for serving our country! God Bless you!

What makes a person suffering from depression push their loved ones away?

Question by Dark Desire.: What makes a person suffering from depression push their loved ones away?
How strong can depression be? How harmful is it? For instance, does depression make your bf/gf want to break up with you over a stupid reason especially when they’re the one suffering depression? What makes them want to push you away and be alone? What makes them want to ignore you to consult their own feelings? Do they realize what they’re doing especially they’re the one in pain?

some family members may not understand how to deal w/ depression….i think listening and being of comfort is one of the greatest suggestions…and if a b/f or g/f can’t deal w/ it ..they were long looking for a way out..if they loved that person , why would you want to lose him or her.

How to overcome depression issues when I start to write a paper for college?

Question by Depressed Honors Student: How to overcome depression issues when I start to write a paper for college?
When I go to start any paper for college all of a sudden I go from feeling normal to utterly depressed and hopeless. Like no matter what I write it will never be good enough. Rationally I know that I do all the readings and even though struggle with the depressions I get pretty good grades, so its not that I am a horrible student. I just don’t want to struggle with the depression and hopeless feelings every paper. Does anyone have any ideas how I can feel better, please?

I have a history of severe depression. My mom is very against medication and counseling, and reluctantly allowed me to go on the lowest dosage of zoloft. It helped, but now she wants me to go off of it and stop going to my doctor. My fear is that my depression will return. What are the chances of my depression returning, and how can I handle it if and when it does?
