What’s the difference between liver cancer and cirrhosis of the liver?

Question by : What’s the difference between liver cancer and cirrhosis of the liver?
Is there a difference between liver cancer and cirrhosis of the liver? If so what is it? Someone on here said I am at risk for liver cancer cause of how much I drink but that confused me cause can liver cancer be caused by drinking a lot? I know cirrhosis can be but what about liver cancer? And which hurts more cirrhosis or liver cancer?

Answer by Tamara
Cirrhosis is scarring of the liver. Scar tissue forms because of injury or long-term disease. Scar tissue replaces healthy liver tissue and blocks the normal flow of blood through the liver.
Causes of cirrhosis include:
-HEAVY ALCOHOL USE
-some drugs, medicines, and harmful chemicals
-infections
-chronic hepatitis B, C, or D—viral infections that attack the liver
-autoimmune hepatitis, which causes the body’s immune system to destroy liver cells
-nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, which is often caused by obesity
-diseases that damage or destroy bile ducts—tubes that carry bile from the liver

Liver cancer consists of the presence of malignant hepatic tumors, growths on, or in, the liver.
Possible causes of liver cancer are:
-chronic Hepatitis B infection
-genetics

So no, heavy drinking cannot cause liver cancer however it *can* exclude you from a transplant list.

Your best bet for proper medical advice is your doctor, not anonymous strangers on the internet who could be a hepatologist or a 14 yr old junior high school student.

How can a thyroid cancer metastasize into only one part of the body?

Question by Jojo Rivers: How can a thyroid cancer metastasize into only one part of the body?
My brother had been diagnosed with thyroid cancer and his cancer managed to metastasize into his liver. My question is, how is it that cancer in one part of the body can metastasize into one part of the body but not the surrounding areas? Or is it just a matter of time?

Best answer:

Answer by cookie
It happens that way cancer.I have found that the liver is much more susceptible to mestatization than other organs because of its functional ties to soo many organs as well as its role in the the body.if he has been treated with chemotherapy or radiation its likely to get the brunt of the effects because of its clean up function…..hopefully in trying to manage it the doctors won’t set off a series of mestizaton on the other organs due to exposure of more chemotherapy agents due to the livers reduced function.
I hope you and your family the best.

How is it possible that healthy people can get cancer?

Question by caltam84: How is it possible that healthy people can get cancer?
Despite healthy people eating the right and healthy foods with good exercise, how is it possible that these people who take good care of themselves get cancer?

But isn’t it suppose to be the other way around? In other words, I mean that people who don’t take care of their health and eat fatty, unhealthy foods get cancer. I doesn’t make sense when healthy people like healthy non-smoking, healthy people get lung cancer.

I know the causes of cancer is to eat unhealthy foods and not do many healthy activities.

But my question is……
What is the cause of lung cancer for people who are non-smokers and take good care of their health? The wife the actor Christopher Reeve(Dana Reeve) died from lung cancer even though she was a non-smoker and a very healthy person.

When you choose to answer my question, don’t answer with “that’s how life is” or “that’s the way it is” or “life is unfair”. Please give a specific and elaborate answer to my question.

Is nature responsible?

Q&A: Why does cancer appear in some places more frequently than others?

Question by PawelC: Why does cancer appear in some places more frequently than others?
For example, people get tumors in their lungs, bladder, stomach, intestines, brain, breasts, and other organs but you never see anyone developing cancer on their fingers, feet, thighs, etc… Cancer is suppose to be able to develop on any tissue in the body so why does it appear more frequently in certain areas? Can someone please explain this to me, I really want to know.

Best answer:

Answer by heyonah
It tends to occur more frequently in epithelial tissue because this type of tissue reproduces most frequently. Since it is the replication of cells that goes awry in cancer, it would follow that we would see cancer more frequently in cell types that divide more frequently.

We are also more likely to see cancers in places that are most commonly exposed to carcinogens such as UV radition and environmental toxins. So for this reason, some of the most common cancer places for cancer are the skin, the lungs and the digestive track.

Q&A: What is the best way to cure esophageal cancer?

Question by doggy dog: What is the best way to cure esophageal cancer?
My father is suffering from esophageal cancer. The cancer has affected a nerve near his throat causing him to lose his voice. Also, it has already metastasized to two other organs.

He has been treated with combined chemotherapy and radiation therapy for half a year, but his cancer shows no sign of shrinking and it’s gradually growing.

His doctor says he cannot surgically remove the cancer because the cancer is adjacent to nerves and important organs and such an operation will damage the adjacent areas.

Isn’t there any good way to cure his cancer?

Best answer:

Answer by Beefcake4U
There’s only one way to cure any cancer and that’s with Essiac A 4 herb Tea or capsule or liquid concentrate containing Burdock Root,Sheep Sorrel, Slippery Elm Bark, And Turkey Rhubarb. All natural. And it’s also been given to 3 of 6 terminally ill Aids patients with only 1 week to live. The 3 on Essiac are still alive without the HIV the other 3 on placebo died. The ones that still live have been cured since 1988.

What types of cancer are common during late adolescence and early adulthood?

Question by Lisa: What types of cancer are common during late adolescence and early adulthood?
Is there a good website to look up this information? I tried googling it I’m not getting any good results.
I’m just curious as to what types of cancer I should be aware or concerned about. I am 18 and I know I shouldn’t be too concerned about cancer at this age, but it does happen.
I don’t know my medical history and I have no idea whether my family has a history of cancer or not.

How long does it take for cancer to run its course?

Question by mewsgirl: How long does it take for cancer to run its course?
Assuming a person were diagnosed with an early form of cancer, how long does it take to run its course? Cervical cancer, for example. Could a person still live a relatively normal life for a while? How long would it take to kill a person if they could not afford or did not have access to treatment?

I assume lung cancer would do you in faster, skin cancer slower. Are there any websites or books that discuss cancer in people who do not get treatment?

Best answer:

Answer by Gary B
Not only does the time depend in the type of cancer, it ALSO depends on the individual and their general over-all health level.

The “quality of life” ALSO depends on the cancer and the person. Some cancers cause very few problems, while others hit you like a truck. Some people can handle small to moderate amounts of pain, while other complain about mosquito bites!

All in all, numbers for expected life time and quality of life CANNOT be given in a general manner, but ONLY after a thorough physiological and psychological examination by the patient’s care team. Times can range from a few months (maybe even weeks) to many years.

[Actually , MELANOMA (skin cancer) is one of the WORST kinds of cancer to get. It "metastasizes" (spreads to other parts of your body) very quickly, and the prognosis for skin cancer is MUCH worse than for lung cancer.]

Q&A: What causes cervical cancer and what to do to prevent it?

Question by رشيدة: What causes cervical cancer and what to do to prevent it?
I read the leaflet regarding common causes. Even smoking can cause cervical cancer? It’s unbelievable. It makes sense that sex with many different partners can cause this cancer. I think if a condom is used, then this cancer can be prevented. Right? What about masturbation? If I masturbate with my clean hands, I guess no cancer bacteria would enter my vagina. Am I right? I’d be grateful for some answers. Thanks.

Best answer:

Answer by Flo Ant
Most of what you have said is incorrect I’m afraid. Please visit the Jo’s Trust website to get accurate info.

The HPV virus is transmitted by sexual contact and isn’t stopped by condoms. Around 80% of people have HPV so even one partner is enough. There are 100 different strains, but only a few are high risk.

The hpv can cause changes in the cells. The body normally fights these changes but not always. Sometimes the cells develop into cancerous ones very slowly.

Regular smear test and the hpv jabs are the best way. Smoking can stop the body fighting the cells too, but sometimes you can do everything right but it just goes wrong anyway.

Hope that helps!

Q&A: How can cancer develop in really healthy people taking good care of themselves?

Question by caltam84: How can cancer develop in really healthy people taking good care of themselves?
A heavy smoker can develop lung cancer because of harmful chemicals overtime to his lungs. But sometimes, lung cancer can develop in a nonsmoker’s lung. Or breast cancer can develop in a healthy woman’s body.

Don’t get me wrong. I know that healthy people are much less likely to get cancer. However, sometimes cancer can develop in healthy people.

Answer by Tania’s second mom
We all possess a gene for cancer. Even scientist don’t know why some get it nd others don’t. Cancer cells don’t care how young you are or how healthy you are. If it manifest itself, then it will. Its almost like they have a mind of their own. My sister-in-law never smoked, always ate well and at 33 developed breast cancer which later traveled to her lungs and killed her. it is no respecter of anyone. My own sister never smoked either. In fact she’s the only one who didn’t. She developed breast cancer and 15 yrs later got brain cancer. No one knows why, we can only hope that scientist can pin point the whys someday. Be blessed
